Can Coffee Improve Kidney Health?

By Lizzie Streit, MS, RDN, LD

Your morning cup of Joe may provide more than just a burst of energy. In fact, recent studies suggest that coffee may even improve kidney health. Since more than 1 in 7 US adults have chronic kidney disease, understanding how certain drinks or foods impact the kidneys can be helpful.

Read on to learn more about the effects of coffee on kidney health and what else to eat or do to keep those organs healthy.

Coffee and Kidneys

A recent study in almost 8,000 adults in the Netherlands found that drinking up to four cups of coffee without added sweeteners per day may help maintain kidney function. The exact reasons why coffee is beneficial for the kidneys are not fully understood, but the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in the beverage may play a role. These compounds may also help prevent high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, both of which are risk factors for kidney disease.

If you are interested in reaping the possible benefits of coffee for kidney health, keep in mind that it should be enjoyed without added sweeteners, syrups, and flavorings. Furthermore, four cups of coffee per day is not always best for everyone, especially if you are sensitive to caffeine. Fortunately, you can still get benefits from just a cup or two. Even decaf coffee has many of the health-promoting compounds found in caffeinated versions.

Other Tips for Kidney Health

While drinking coffee may indeed be helpful for preserving kidney function in some people, more research is needed. Plus, it’s not the only thing you can do to keep your kidneys healthy

The most important way to maintain kidney health is managing diabetes and high blood pressure if you have one or both of these conditions. These conditions are the leading causes of chronic kidney disease, and it’s vital to work with your healthcare provider to ensure they are under control. Take medications if you are prescribed them and focus on making healthy food choices. Eating balanced meals with vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains and cutting back on salt and added sugar are helpful strategies. In addition to dietary changes, certain lifestyle habits can promote kidney health. Engaging in regular exercise, such as brisk walking and resistance training, can help prevent conditions that lead to poor kidney function. Other tips for keeping your kidneys in tip top shape include limiting alcohol, reducing stress, and quitting smoking. Adding in a cup of coffee (without added sugar!) here and there certainly can’t hurt, but it’s not the only way to have healthy kidneys.
